Homework
Reading
Homework at Meanwood involves 15 to 20 minutes daily reading at home and answering the book quizzes. Children can either read their reading book or read a book on myOn. There are lots of great books, and even news articles on myOn for those who prefer non-fiction. When they have finished a book, the children need to complete the related book quiz using Accelerated Reader and then they can change their reading book in school for a new one or move onto another book on myOn. (See below for links to the webpages.)
Children receive certificates in school for increasing their word count, which increases every time they successfully pass a quiz and we often have 'millionaire' readers in Year 5.
Daily reading in Year 5 is still very important to develop speed and fluency and improve comprehension skills. Children who read regularly are also more likely to become better writers and are often even better at maths as the children need to read well to solve problems.
Maths
We also expect your child to learn the current half term's maths facts and to continue to practise their tables for 5 minutes every day using TTRS to gain rapid fluency. (Google TTRS or use the link below.) A lot of the maths work in Year 5 needs a fluent knowledge of times tables to 12 x 12, so please help your child to master these if they are not yet secure.
Other ways to help your child
The children have also been given a grammar booklet home and if you have any extra time, we would like them to learn the definitions and spellings on this.
If you have any problems logging in using the sheet of passwords sent home, please see one of the Year 5 staff who will be happy to help you with this.
